GUYANA MOURNS THE PASSING OF POLITICAL ICON EUSI KWAYANA AT 101
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA | OCTOBER 10, 2026 — Veteran Guyanese political activist, educator, historian and former parliamentarian Eusi Kwayana has died at the age of 101, according to a statement issued by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
Born Sydney Evanson King on April 4, 1925, in Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, Kwayana dedicated much of his life to politics, education, racial equality and social justice. His political career spanned several major movements in Guyana’s history, including the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), the People’s National Congress (PNC) and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), where he worked alongside the late Dr. Walter Rodney.

Kwayana served as Minister of Communication and Works in the PPP government of 1953 and later represented the WPA in Parliament. He was also a prolific writer and playwright whose publications explored Guyana’s political history, race relations and national identity.
In announcing his passing, the PNCR/APNU described Kwayana as a patriot, historian and elder statesman whose contributions extended across generations of Guyana’s political development. The opposition groups extended condolences to his family, friends and all those influenced by his decades of public service.
