OPPOSITION LEADER EXPRESSES NO CONFIDENCE IN MV BARIMA COI, DEMANDS VESSEL RECOVERY AND G$5M FOR FAMILIES

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has publicly expressed a lack of confidence in the Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the MV Barima tragedy, calling for the sunken vessel to be recovered, interim financial assistance for affected families and the release of three crew members facing criminal charges.

“I have no confidence or trust in this COI,” Mohamed declared during an engagement with families of victims, survivors and members of the Commission, according to video footage reported by Prime News.

Mohamed argued that recovering the MV Barima from the seabed should have been a priority before the Commission began its investigative work. He maintained that the vessel itself could be central to establishing the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

His call for the vessel to be raised appeared to receive support from members of the gathering, who voiced agreement with his position.

In addition, Mohamed called for the release of three crew members who have been jailed in connection with the tragedy.

The demand raises a separate legal issue, as decisions concerning the detention, bail or release of accused persons fall within the criminal justice process rather than the authority of the Commission of Inquiry.

Mohamed’s remarks reflect his stated dissatisfaction with the investigative process and his position that the recovery of the vessel and assistance to families should receive greater priority.

The Commission’s findings have yet to be determined, and Mohamed’s criticisms do not, by themselves, establish that the inquiry is incapable of conducting an independent investigation.

The MV Barima tragedy has prompted continuing demands for answers, accountability and support for those affected. The Commission is tasked with examining the circumstances of the disaster and making findings and recommendations.

The questions now include whether the vessel will be recovered, what interim assistance will be provided to affected families, and how the Commission will address concerns raised by survivors and relatives as its work continues.
