Opposition Leader Questions 14-Day Wait for Captain’s Licence Renewal, Says MARAD Yet to Provide Update
Maritime Administration Department regulatory offices along the Georgetown harbourfront.
The Leader of the Opposition has voiced strong criticism regarding procedural bottlenecks at the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), where commercial river and coastal captains are facing waiting times exceeding two weeks for statutory licence renewals.
Addressing members of the press in Georgetown, the Opposition Leader highlighted that the prolonged processing window has left scores of speedboat operators, water taxi operators, and cargo navigators grounded along the Demerara, Essequibo, and Berbice river routes, curtailing everyday commuter transit and market supply chains.
